"what can we not transmit over fiber optics? power!" Wrong, there are actually fiber optic cables that transmit power too. In the form of high power lasers that get converted into electricity at the receiving device. They're not as thin though and and heat is an unavoidable issue.

  • Willium_Bob_Cole

how hard would it be to just put a couple copper cables down this thing to also deliver power? I don't know how useful it would be for most real-world use-cases, but at the very least, it could maybe add further strength, right? Speaking of strength, your demonstration was compelling, but I would like to see a test on fatigue from less extreme but highly repetitive bending. At this price point, you want to be DAMN sure it's gonna stand the test of time. Wrenching on it a couple times and surviving is one thing, but what if you had it running under the carpet and you had less than stable floorboards, there might be spots along the cable that are subjected to small but frequent disturbances from just walking around that could add up to big problems, and that's not to mention running it under/over/around doors etc. Anyways I'm just holding out for the wireless future, no cables ever again, even for power, anything less is a stop-gap

Just 20 Gbit/sec? What year are you in? The optical fiber itself doesn't limit the speed, only the electronics and optics on both ends are the limitation, not the glass I have 40gig optics in my leaf-spine core and my ISP uses 100Gig optics,

Cables overheating is normal thing due to natural resistance of condactors in the cable, that why cables comes voltage and current limits as if you cross them cable starts to heat and it can even melt isolation if you go extreme

Shame we never got the original idea for Thunderbolt. It was meant to be fiber, but also have a copper run for power. Maybe by Thunderbolt 6 it will fulfill the original goal. :)

*here have a cable no one needs, and a GPU in a box no one needs* have a Liquid cooler no one needs.... OC so you can shorten the lifespan of the components because you know.. just throw stuff in the trash. Here buy this "glass wire" like why didn't they call it that? for easy payment of the price of an average GPU you too can have GLASS WIRE!

Practical Use: I recently purchased a Vive Eye VR headset with WiGig Wireless, which requires that the computer be near the play area for wireless connectivity. But I also use my computer in my office across the house, and need dual monitors to work. Corning 50m cable and a thunderbolt 3 hub was the perfect solution with no performance hit. I have had no issues and love the setup, both for VR work and Office computer work flawlessly. I am blown away at this cables ability to function it does not make sense to me. This cable defies logic! Probably could have built a whole new PC for the cost though.

i had said the same thing 10 years ago for a working concept of usb A to usb A with optical fibers: it must be really difficult to add a copper lane to transfer power only, next to a million optical fibers they packed together. super-speed, super-expensive, unable to power a device. lol. the concept 10years ago didn't had a name like usb 2.0 or usb 3.0. just "USB-A 100GBPS" (it had a lot of o.f.s in the cable and beefy plugs)

You should buy a ton of sfm-28, maybe kilometers of fiber (10 to 12 km), and splice each of the fibers of the corning cable to this bunch of fiber, it's possible to do that with a optical fiber splicer apparatus, they are expensive, but you can use it to repair broken fibers.

    • ceber54

I know what i'm saying, in our lab we have 2 bunch of 12 km of fiber each.

  • Einheit-101

  • ceber54

When he said "Corning" i knew immediately that should be something related to optical fiber. I work in a lab with tons of optical fiber, specifically SFM-28, monomodal @ 1550 nm.

  • xyeahtony1

watching linus twist that fiber optic cable was so cringe

  • pefcs

I don"t really understand why Linus always has to go somewhere far to show that the cable can transport data that far properly. Technically never mind how far you are if the cable length is static, and it's a closed system, the data has to go over the same length. Never mind, if you have the cable rolled up, and put next to the devices you connect, or you go outside the building.

Totally unrelated question to this video but I know everyone here could probably help out, in the game for a new speaker looking to get something pretty big for outdoor use, parties, by the pool stuff like that, got a JBL Flip 4 right now but the sound can’t even really come close to filling a backyard specially with lots of people. Been eyeing up a few. Sony’s XB72, JBL Partybox 300, Boombox 2, a few ultimate ears ones. Anyone know what the best speaker that fits what I’m looking for is in about the $400-$450 range. Any recommendations help ! Portability isn’t a huge issue should stay pretty stationary just want great sound, lots of volume, anything else on top is just a bonus
